Chilly7 - EFA congratulates iiNet on its historic High Court victory

Though the high court made its ruling, ISPs and Web sites may not be out of the woods yet. The &quot;Future History&quot; on on althist site predicts a law that would be SOPA 3.0, to be enacted in the next Congress that could have severe repurcussions for Australia, if their predictions are true. Australians could find themselves being extradited to the USA for violation of new criminal copyright statutes. I hope their predictions are wrong, but you never know what these SOPA weasals will come up with next.<div class="feedflare">

Jeff Citizen - Conroy: Filter alive and kicking

I never used to care about such things but my eyes were opened one day when I realized what the social engineers like Conroy were taking away from us, piece by piece. It&#039;s not child porn they&#039;re &#039;saving&#039; us all from, it&#039;s INFORMATION they don&#039;t want us to have. It&#039;s no coincidence that the number of sites that greet me with &#039;Connection has been reset&quot; these days is creeping higher and higher. We Australians are so much like stupid sheep. We let our government order us around instead of showing them who&#039;s boss at election time. That miserable bastard Conroy has to go and anyone else who messes with our basic freedoms.<div class="feedflare">

I have been unable to find a single thing and suspect that Conroy has been very silent recently. Is there anywhere i can follow the progress of legistlation? Thanks<div class="feedflare">

Rebecca - Media Release - EFA condemns Whirlpool lawsuit

I&#039;m obviously very naive - because to me this appears to be an open/shut case, since there is a strong defence (according to the defamation act 2005). I really don&#039;t see how they have a case at all, since the negative comments are obviously about individual users opinions (honest opinion) based on their experience. Surely if their products did what their customers expected (i.e. they got what they paid for) then their products would not be criticised so heavily. This could also go into substantive or contextual truth. Then you add in - what does whirlpool have to do - not allow &#039;public interest&#039; information to be disseminated? How does the consumer group &#039;Choice&#039; avoid defamation? If whirlpool users want to advise their community (it may be huge, and distributed, but it is essentially a community group) of the pitfalls they&#039;ve experienced, and someone chooses not to spend their cash on that product because of it - surely thats not defamation, thats consumer choice based on workmanship?<div class="feedflare">

If Demand Progress is correct on the House version of Protect IP, in America, sites that host content anywhere in the world, could become liable under US laws. This could end up being far worse than anything has proposed so far. Australia could end up being affect by Protect IP. This bill will destroy the internet, it it becomes law.<div class="feedflare">
